Cultural competence is the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.

Cultural competence includes:

  • Personal awareness of one’s own cultural worldview,
  • Individual's attitudes toward cultural differences,
  • Knowledge of different cultural practices and world views, and
  • Cross-cultural skills.

The NRC offers cultural competence trainings focused on understanding the strengths and enhancing the resilience of diverse families and communities. Training options include both introductory and advanced trainings in cultural competence at the individual, and organizational levels.  We also offer cultural competence training specifically for supervisors.

More information about cultural competence training offerings is available on the Specialty Trainings page. For more detailed information or to get a training quote please contact NRC Training Director Kellee McCrory at kellee-mccrory@uiowa.edu.
